A monthly injectable GLP-1 drug from Pfizer’s $10 billion Metsera acquisition is now on track for a Phase 3 program spanning 10 pivotal studies this year. While Pfizer’s pipeline spans internally developed and in-licensed assets for other targets, the pharma company says the Metsera drug is the foundation for its obesity strategy pursuing monotherapies and combination treatments.

The financial consideration and the greater certainly of a deal close tipped the balance in Pfizer’s favor, ending a bidding war for Metsera and its next-generation obesity medications.

Pfizer claims Metsera breached their merger agreement, adding that a tie-up of the biotech with GLP-1 drug giant Novo Nordisk would violate U.S. antitrust law. Acquisition talks for Metsera that played out this year culminated in an agreement with Pfizer, which agreed to buy the obesity drug developer for $4.9 billion. Novo Nordisk, a finalist in that pursuit, is positioning itself as a deal spoiler with a new unsolicited offer that shells out much more upfront cash.
Pfizer is acquiring Metsera and its pipeline of obesity medications that could offer dosing and tolerability advantages for patients as well as a manufacturing edge for the pharma giant. Key data Phase 2 readouts for Metsera’s lead GLP-1 drug candidate are expected in 2026.
Novo Nordisk, AbbVie, and Roche each have weekly injectable drug candidates designed to bind to and activate the amylin receptor to trigger weight loss. Metsera’s contender, MET-233i, is designed with technology that enables longer dosing intervals and the company is proceeding with development of this engineered peptide as a monotherapy and as part of a drug combination.

Investors showed appetite for Metsera’s IPO, as shares of the clinical-stage metabolic medicines biotech popped 47% in their Nasdaq debut. Maze Therapeutics and Beta Bionics also priced IPOs; the three companies raised $636 million combined.
